Commonwealth Games Delhi 2010

“Pan-Britannic-Pan-Anglican Contest and Festival every four years as a means of increasing the goodwill and good understanding of the British Empire”.
By an article of Astley Cooper in “The Times”, 1891

In 1911, the Festival of the Empire was held in London to celebrate the coronation of King George V. As part of the festival an Inter-Empire Championships was held in which teams from Australia, Canada, South Africa and the United Kingdom competed in events such as boxing, wrestling, swimming and athletics.

The first Games were held in 1930 in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. The name changed to British Empire and Commonwealth Games in 1954, to British Commonwealth Games in 1970 and assumed the current name of the Commonwealth Games in 1978.

At the most recent Games in Melbourne, Australia in 2006, over 4000 athletes took part in sporting competitions. There are currently 53 members of the Commonwealth of Nations, and 71 teams participate in the Games.

There are a total of 31 sports and a further 7 para-sports which are approved by the Commonwealth Games Federation.

Nations that have competed only six teams have attended every Commonwealth Games: Australia, Canada, England, New Zealand, Scotland and Wales.

Australia has been the highest scoring team for ten games, England for seven and Canada for one.

As the commonwealth looks like, the organization is not made to influence any country economically or politically or to practice the strength of one country over the other but it is meant to establish and strengthen a friendly relationship between the member countries to help each others in future.

So, let me explain, in a layman’s language (the way I have learned) what Commonwealth and Commonwealth Games are all about.

The Commonwealth is primarily an organization in which countries with diverse economic backgrounds have an opportunity for close and equal interaction. The primary activities of the Commonwealth are designed to create an atmosphere of economic co-operation between member nations, as well as the promotion of democracy, human rights, and good governance in those nations.
